live shows are put on by the artist antagonist movement. To book a show, it seems fastest through their myspace run by ethan. on thursdays they host the downstairs tiki bar with an art gallery opening. so bands can feed off the art gallery crowd, but if you're not good enough, the crowd tends to stay in the gallery room and drink. the dj isn't too focused on sound, we saw him leave during the middle of a performance to get some juice at a deli. for sound check he said he had two direct boxes, then when we played, he didn't. so you're on your own as far as sound quality goes. the stage is tiny, and can only fit one drummer. if you set up on the floor in front, it's uneven, so if you have a keyboard stand it's pretty wobbly. the nice thing is AAM provides each band member with 3 drink tickets. i've never had such generousity from a small bar for band members. after your set, you can definitely get buzzed with 3 drink tickets. AAM comes off as an activist group (they have their own apparel and zine which have an angsty vibe), so research their mission statement if you have issues performing, but if you don't care and just want to play, it's nice. plus the locale is really easy to bring a crowd to, right in the heart of east village.

goodbye blue monday is one of the homiest places to perform in nyc. it's a fun knick knack thift store junk shop cafe slash live music place. the stage is a comfortable size, and place is small enough, you could get away with singing with out mics, if you're a confident singer. there is a small but dedicated audience of regulars and musicians. the piano is tuned and used in performances. the owner is pleasant and focused on helping the music scene. there is beer, wine, coffee, and snacks available. highly recommended, the cider rum when it's available. they play music in the background when you're setting up and are very friendly to small touring bands. book way ahead of schedule. the only downer is the main access is by JMZ, which doesn't run that often when it's late and you're finishing up a show. for some this place is too deep into bushwick, but you gotta face a fact that manhattan and even williamsburg are getting too pricey. art and music will be moving deeper into these burroughs.

the stage size suits only two people. maybe 3 people if you are playing simple instruments. otherwise place extra members off the stage. the lighting is beautiful but hot on stage. there is no sound guy, you manage it yourself. bring an iPod with connector to the rca tape in of the mixer, so you can play music while setting up, otherwise the audience is silently staring at you setting up.
